Turkey Shopping Tips
By: RecipeCove.com
1. Make sure the packaging is free of punctures or holes. Any damage to the packaging may mean that the turkey is contaminated.
Punctures and holes will also allow juices to drip from the packaging, possibly contaminating other food or surfaces.
2. Many stores run special sales on turkeys around the holidays. If you have the freezer space, take advantage of the
specials and stock up.
3. Fresh turkeys are more expensive than frozen as they require special handling and do not have as long a shelf life.
Fresh turkeys can be more convenient than frozen as you do not have to allow time for thawing. But, if you have the time
to thaw a frozen turkey, rest assured, the quality and flavor can be just as good as a fresh one.
4. If you plan to buy a fresh turkey try to purchase it no more than one or two days before you plan to cook it. Make
sure it is stored in the coldest section of your refrigerator.
5. When purchasing a fresh turkey make it the last thing you add to your grocery cart. This will cut down on the amount
of time the turkey is not refrigerated. If you are not going straight home, play it safe. Bring a cooler with you and place
the turkey in the cooler with some ice to ensure that it is kept properly cool until you can get home.
6. Many grocery story turkeys come with pop-up timers already inserted in the bird. While these are convenient, they
are sometimes unreliable. Use a good meat thermometer to ensure that your turkey is cooked properly. If you don not have
a meat thermometer pick one up at the grocery store when you buy your turkey
